Conference Scholarship Policy

Qualifying first authors of abstracts submitted to the MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting may apply for a Conference Scholarship. There will be an option to apply for a Conference Scholarship when submitting abstracts online. By selecting this option, a series of application questions will be presented to be completed.  

Abstract submission and scholarship application must be completed prior to the regular abstract submission deadline.

I. Purpose

MASCC is committed to increasing attendance of oncology healthcare professionals from low-income countries at its Annual Meeting. MASCC provides a limited number of conference scholarships for this purpose in cases where attendance would not be possible without financial assistance.

II. Scope

This scholarship is given to oncology healthcare professionals whose practice and/or research focuses on supportive care in cancer, such as physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, dental hygienists, and psychologists. Qualified applicants must affirm their inability to attend the meeting without scholarship funds.

III. Award

The award consists of (1) complimentary conference registration (2) two nights accommodation (3) reimbursement of travel expenses per the MASCC Expense Reimbursement Policy for Annual Meetings. Any additional expenses including meals are at the expense of the individual. Reimbursement will be made after the meeting by bank transfer.

IV. Eligibility

  1. Applicants must work and live in a country of limited resources (see Eligible Countries List).
  2. Applicants must be oncology healthcare professionals, such as a physician, nurse, social worker, pharmacist, dentist, dental hygienist, or psychologist.
  3. Applicants must have a professional focus on supportive cancer care. 
  4. Applicants must submit an abstract to the Annual Meeting and answer the questions related to the Conference Scholarship application prior to the regular abstract deadline.
  5. Candidates who have previously been awarded a Conference Scholarship (or Travel Scholarship) are not eligible to reapply.

Procedures

I. Application Process

  1. There will be an option to apply for the Young Investigator Award when submitting abstracts online. By selecting this option, a series of application questions will be presented to be completed. This submission must be completed prior to the regular abstract deadline.
  2. Applicants must attest to an inability to attend the Annual Meeting without a Conference Scholarship.

II. Selection Process

  1. Awards Committee members and ad hoc reviewers (if needed) will review and score all potential applications and make a decision based on the following criteria:
    • stated need to attend the meeting
    • potential benefits from attending the meeting
  2. Recipients will be determined by the highest scores.
  3. A limited number of Conference Scholarships will be awarded each year, the specific number depending on availability of funds.
  4. Applicants will be notified of the Committee’s decision via email.
  5. Applicants must be present at the MASCC Annual Meeting to receive a travel reimbursement.
  6. Applicants may be asked to write a brief report after the meeting and also to complete a short post-meeting evaluation.
