AICSO - A New MASCC Affiliate

AICSO logo2019    MASCC has just signed an affiliate agreement with the Associação de Investigação e Cuidados de Suporte em Oncologia (AICSO), the Oncology Supportive Care Research Association in Portugal. AICSO Board member Dr. Andreia Capela has been instrumental in bringing about this partnership, which will increase the memberships of both organizations, support collaboration, and help to promote the goals of supportive care in cancer. AICSO, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit, public interest institution. Its aim is the integration of supportive care resources for cancer patients all along the cancer continuum. In recent years, the organization has been active in promoting an active lifestyle for all patients living with and beyond cancer. To meet its goals, AICSO promotes research programs and professional development in supportive cancer care, as well as helping to educate the public about the importance of supportive care for all cancer patients and survivors. 2020 Best of MASCC Russia

2020    The Russian Society of Supportive Care in Oncology (RASSC) recently held the Best of MASCC on October 9.  The conference, based in Moscow, was held online, and welcomed more than 500 attendees.  The international virtual event focused on issues in supportive cancer care including anemia, cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, nutritional support, psychological and psychiatric care, preservation of fertility in young patients, and concomitant therapy in the era of COVID-19.

10th Annual TAO Cancer Toxicity Management Meeting

2020    The 10th annual TAO Cancer Toxicity Management (CTM) meeting will be held December 3-4, 2020.  The meeting, based in Paris, France, will be held virtually and focus on current events, with two sessions on “Cancer and COVID-19.” Sessions will address prehabilitation and rehabilitation. A significant place will be given to international experiences, with a  focus on pain, genetics, and the microbiome.

MASCC Participates in Japanese Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC) Virtual 2020 Annual Meeting

2020    MASCC proudly participated in the Japanese Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC) 5th Annual Meeting held in August.  Originally planned for Kyoto, the meeting was held virtually due to COVID-19.  The meeting included a novel hybrid of both pre-recorded and live sessions. The theme of the meeting was “Diversity, Dialogue and Altruism,” and included the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Psycho-Oncology Society (JPOS) and the 25th Congress of the Japanese Society for Palliative Medicine (JSPM).

MASCC Affiliate AICSO Shares Recent Research on Physical Exercise and Cancer Patients

2020    MASCC Member Andreia Capela, MD, of Centro Hospitalar Vila Nova de Gaia, Espinho Santa Iria de Azoia, Portugal, recently shared the research findings of her OncoMove team on the efficacy of a low-cost community-based supervised exercise program in early breast cancer survivors after primary treatment.  OncoMove is part of the of Association of Oncology Research and Support Care (AICSO), a MASCC affiliate.  AICSO is dedicated to the research, implementation and professional qualification on evidence-based supportive care in oncology.  To read more, click here

MASCC Announces A Record Year of Membership Growth

2020    MASCC is proud to announce a record growth in the number of memberships over the last one year. The number of MASCC members has grown from 1040 in May 2019 to 1581 in May 2020, an increase of over 50%. The increase in membership marks one of the top strategic priorities for outgoing MASCC President Rajesh Lalla and the Membership Committee. “Our success is due to strong partnerships with supportive cancer care leaders, advocates, and change-makers across the globe,” said Lalla.

MASCC’s Newest Affiliate: Japanese Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC)

2019    In November 2019, the Japanese Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC) became MASCC’s newest affiliate. This affiliation allows for joint membership in both organizations with all membership benefits. MASCC’s affiliate program was designed to strengthen relationships with national associations of supportive care in cancer around the world. Partnering with other organizations helps to promote supportive care at the local level with special attention to each nation’s particular needs and resources, as well as economic and cultural issues. The aim is to create a global network of supportive care organizations that allows for international collaboration, as well as enhancing the experiences of cancer patients worldwide.

Report from RASSC: Third International Symposium, “Supportive Therapy in Oncology: From Theory to Practice”

2019    The Russian Society of Supportive Care in Oncology (RASSC) held its third International Symposium, “Supportive Therapy in Oncology: From Theory to Practice,” in Chelyabinsk, Russian Federation, on October 4th, 2019. The Symposium brought together more than 170 specialists engaged in the treatment of cancer patients throughout the region. Doctors, students, and residents learned about recent advances and the range of national and global opportunities in supportive oncology. This year, the Symposium gained international status following the signing, in June 2019, of an affiliation agreement between RASSC and MASCC.

2019 Best of MASCC India

The second Best of MASCC India meeting, hosted by the Indian Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (IASCC), was held September 14-15 at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and included more than 130 attendees. IASCC, a subdivision of Nag Foundation, a public charitable trust in Pune, Maharashtra, India, became a MASCC affiliate in May 2019. The meeting was organized by IASCC President Dinesh C. Doval, MD, DM, and Vice-Presidents Sudeep Gupta, MD, DM, and Shona Nag, MD, along with organizing secretaries Vikas Ostwal, MD, DM, Anant Ramaswamy, MD, DM, and Anant Gokam, MD, DM.

The 4th Annual Meeting of JASCC was held on September 6th and 7th in Aomori, Japan, and was attended by more than 1,000 delegates, including medical and surgical oncologists, radiologists, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, nurses, patients, and industry representatives. The meeting was preceded by a presentation for Board members and Councillors on the Medical Information Network Distribution System (MINDS), a method of guideline development.

9th Annual Cancer Toxicity Management Meeting

2019    The 9th Cancer Toxicity Management Meeting will be held December 5-6, 2019, in Paris, France. The meeting was founded by MASCC Board member Florian Scotté, MD, PhD, and is sponsored by MASCC and AFSOS (Association Francophone des Soins Oncologiques de Support).

This year’s program features sessions on innovative treatments, impacts of treatments, treatment sequence, and tolerance to immunotherapies. Other topics of discussion include therapeutic cannabis, antiemetics, and patient care recommendations. The program will include a session at which young physicians will present examples of innovative care in oncology. Among the speakers are numerous MASCC members, including Matti Aapro, MD, Andrea Antonuzzo, MD, Richard Berman, MBBS, MRCGP, FRCP, Paolo Bossi, MD, Mario Di Palma, MD, Pere Gascón, MD, FRCP, Richard Gralla, MD, Karin Jordan, MD, Jean Klastersky, MD, Fausto Roila, MD, and Florian Scotté, MD, PhD.

This year also marks the first Jean Klastersky Award, created to recognize young physicians involved in the care of cancer patients. Candidates are invited to submit an application documenting a clinical case of innovative care or a proposal for a study on cancer toxicity management. From among the applicants, six candidates will be selected to present their work at the meeting. The awardee will receive financial support and complimentary registration at the 2020 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting. The application deadline for the Jean Klastersky Award is November 20, 2019.

Russian Society of Supportive Care in Oncology

2019    As Dr. Rajesh Lalla noted in his President’s Message in our July issue, MASCC has recently signed an affiliation agreement with the Russian Society of Supportive Care in Oncology (RASSC). RASSC is led by Dr. Anton Snegovoy, Chairman of the Board, and Dr. Inessa Kononenko, Executive Director. The affiliation includes the reciprocal agreement that all members of RASSC automatically become MASCC members and all current MASCC members residing in the Russian Federation become members of RASSC.

The IASCC’s mission is to promote research and education in the field of oncology supportive care among Indian healthcare providers. Its specific objectives are (1) to promote and undertake supportive care education for oncologists, nurses, and other oncology professionals through courses, modules, and meetings and (2) to collaborate with MASCC on research projects. Through its affiliate program, MASCC aims to create a global network of supportive care organizations that allows for international collaboration, as well as enhancing the experiences of cancer patients worldwide.

NICSO-A New MASCC Affiliate

2019    MASCC signed an affiliation agreement with the Network Italiano Cure di Supporto in Oncologia (NICSO), the Italian network of supportive care in oncology. With MASCC affiliation, members of NICSO become full members of MASCC with all membership benefits.

NICSO was formed in 2014 as an open multidisciplinary association for all those who work with patients with cancer. Its mission is to stimulate and facilitate training and scientific research on cancer support therapies in order to offer patients a better quality of life. It aims to improve prevention and treatment of symptoms, co-morbidity, and side effects of anticancer therapies from the time of diagnosis through treatment, post-treatment, and rehabilitation.
