2019 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting Workshops

2019    Four workshops will be offered at the 2019 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Unlike recent years, these workshops will take place at different times and are scheduled throughout the scientific program, rather than all on one morning. Also, these workshops will not require a separate fee in addition to Meeting registration. All registered attendees are welcome to attend any or all workshops.

Mucositis Research: Pain Management — Friday, June 21, 3:40 - 5:10 PM
The overall goal of this workshop is to bring together basic, translational, and clinical researchers in an exciting and interactive setting to advance the understanding of mucositis mechanisms and management. This year, the theme of the workshop is management of mucositis-associated pain. The program includes presentations by experts about the latest state of the science in mucositis research and an opportunity for young investigators to present their work to an expert audience for specialized feedback and research advice. The workshop will also provide a basis for face-to-face discussions regarding collaborative research, the development of international research networks, and the development of links with multidisciplinary teams to pursue new research opportunities.

Complications of Immunotherapy — Saturday, June 22, 3:40 - 5:10 PM
Advances in pharmacological and cellular treatments for cancer have resulted in dramatic benefits for patients, but also in new toxicities. This workshop will address various toxic side effects and complications associated with immunotherapies, including pulmonary complications, skin toxicities, and gastrointestinal problems among others. The workshop will also include discussion of effective patient education and communication about adverse events.

Understanding the Design of Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analyses, and Clinical Studies in Supportive Care — Sunday, June 23, 8:30 - 10:00 AM
The workshop will explore issues related to the evaluation of evidence and the conduct of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Its main objectives are to introduce participants to helpful tools and to demystify abstract concepts and techniques through a combination of lectures and case-based examples. Topics will include publication bias, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sources of heterogeneity as well as its implications and statistical treatment, and guidelines for reporting systematic reviews.

Technological Advances and Emerging Strategies for Treatment-Related Symptoms during Cancer Survivorship — Sunday, June 23, 1:40 - 3:10 PM
The workshop is designed to evaluate and discuss emerging strategies for survivorship care delivery, including e-platforms and virtual health technology. Through lectures, case study, and panel discussion, speakers and participants will evaluate current and emerging mobile platforms for symptom management with a focus on neurological treatment-related complications and fatigue. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of future research partnerships. A further objective of the workshop is to produce a white paper on the use of technology in survivorship care delivery and symptom management.
