2019 The 2019 Annual Cancer Treatment-Related Adverse Events Symposium will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019 and Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Rockefeller Research Laboratories, 430 East 67th Street, New York, NY. The course is directed by MASCC member Mario E. Lacouture, MD, who is the Director of the Oncodermatology Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Systemic anticancer therapies, including cytotoxic chemotherapies, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies, have improved patient survival. However, a majority of patients treated with such therapies develop toxicities of various organ systems that can affect overall health and activities of daily living. These effects can result in inconsistent therapy and suboptimal clinical outcomes. Prevention and management of these adverse events are critical to optimizing both treatment success and patients’ quality of life.
The Symposium will provide up-to-date information on adverse event mechanisms and management relevant to organ systems most commonly affected by cancer therapies. The goals are to increase (1) knowledge about grading adverse events, (2) understanding of mechanisms to improve intervention, and (3) awareness of clinical tools to assess treatment-related toxicities. The course is intended for oncology physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other professionals involved in the care of cancer patients.

Other presentations address cytotoxic and targeted therapies, as well as immunotherapy-related adverse events. Topics include integrative medicine in oncology, treatment-related coagulopathies, hypersensitivity reactions, hyperglycemia, adverse event triage, and treatment-related cardiac, sexual, ocular toxicities, and psychiatric and cognitive disorders. Immune-related topics include cardiac, gastrointestinal, kidney, neurologic, dermatologic, rheumatic, and endocrine toxicities and adverse events.
