Research on Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Study confirms that key risk factors for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) include older age, chemotherapy type, history of neuropathy, symptom burden, number of chemotherapy cycles, and alcohol intake, with higher rates of CIPN in patients treated with taxane-based, as opposed to platinum-based therapies.

 
Early Detection of Anthracycline-Induced Cardiotoxicity

In a prospective study, Maryam Lustberg and colleagues showed that myocardial inflammation could be detected by the CMR relaxation parameter T2 and was associated with anthracycline therapy in women with breast cancer.

In the August 2019 issue, we introduce MASCC’s newest affiliate, the Russian Society of Supportive Care in Oncology. MASCC President Dr. Rajesh Lalla discusses efforts to grow MASCC membership. We also focus on neurological complications of cancer and its treatment with a profile of the Neurological Complications Study Group, led by Drs. Maryam Lustberg and Alex Chan, as well as a research highlight on risk factors for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. A second research highlight summarizes the work of Dr. Maryam Lustberg and her colleagues on early detection of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity in breast cancer survivors. As usual, we include several conference reminders and deadlines. We extend a warm welcome to new members who joined us in June. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC! 

 
New Clinical Practice Guideline on MRONJ

A new MASCC/ISOO/ASCO Clinical Practice Guideline on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Rachel Gibson, PhD, is the recipient of MASCC’s 2019 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her meritorious achievement and outstanding contributions to the society.

 
2019 Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award – Jane Ussher

Jane Ussher, PhD, of the University of Western Sydney, Australia, is the winner of MASCC’s 2019 Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award for her research titled “Sexual Issues in Partners of Cancer Patients.”

 
2019 Young Investigator Awards

The 2019 MASCC Young Investigator Award winners are Rebecca Burgoyne, MPharm (UK), Selina Chow (Canada), Nikesha Gilmore, PhD (USA), Rahat Ul Ain, MBBS, FCPS (Pakistan), and Derek K. Smith, DDS, PhD, who was named Outstanding Young Investigator.
