In the October 2018 issue, we bring you reports of two recent successful meetings of interest: the first-ever Best of MASCC meeting and the Third Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC). We also highlight the upcoming Second International Symposium on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws. In this issue, MASCC President, Dr. Raj Lalla, discusses the Best of MASCC meeting and the formation of an Indian affiliate of MASCC. We also announce the evolution of the Bone Study Group to the Bone & Musculoskeletal Study Group and include a Study Group profile, featuring past and future activities. We’re pleased to congratulate longtime MASCC member Dr. Judi Johnson on her recent Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota. We extend a warm welcome to all the new members who joined us in August. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

 
Best of MASCC India, 2018

The first-ever “Best of MASCC” meeting in India took place September 1-2, 2018 in Mumbai and was designed to increase awareness of supportive cancer care and of MASCC in India. The meeting culminated in a proposal to establish a new society, the Indian Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (IASCC).

 
JASCC's Third Annual Meeting, 2018

The third Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC) was held August 31 to September 1, 2018. With a focus on evidence-based supportive care,, the meeting featured a guideline consensus meeting, a JASCC-MASCC Joint Symposium, and a JASCC-JAOSCC Joint Symposium.

 
Second International Symposium on MRONJ, Nov. 2, 2018

The Second International Symposium on MRONJ will take place on Friday, November 2, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Chaired by Morten Schiødt, DDS, DrOdont, the meeting features a faculty of 10 highly recognized European experts in MRONJ, including MASCC and ISOO members Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis, DDS, MSc, DrDent, and Bente Herlofson, DDS, PhD.

 
Dr. Judi Johnson Honored for Outstanding Achievement

Long-time MASCC member Judith (Judi) Johnson, PhD, RN, FAAN, was awarded the University of Minnesota’s 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award for her long career as a tireless champion of patient education and its importance to successful cancer chemotherapy.

 
Profile: Bone & Musculoskeletal Study Group

MASCC’s Bone & Musculoskeletal Study Group (BMSG) is a natural evolution of the former Bone Study Group led by Chair, Dr. Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis and Vice-Chairs, Dr. Beatrice Edwards and Dr. Winston Tan. The BMSG aims to advance understanding of bone and musculoskeletal health in cancer patients. The group will conduct research and develop guidelines for the prevention and treatment of skeletal complications associated with cancer and its treatments.

 
MASCC Society News September 2018

In the September 2018 issue, MASCC President Raj Lalla talks about the importance of partnerships to achieving MASCC’s mission.    Meet MariaLuisa Vigano, the youngest investigator to present research at the MASCC Annual Meeting, and Paulina Ackley Akpan IdioK, winner of this year’s Cynthia N. Rittenberg Travel Scholarship. We’ve included an updated list of Study Group leaders, since there have been several recent changes. It’s not too early to start thinking about our next Annual Meeting. We have information and tools to help, and Meeting Chair Andrew Davies invites everyone to MASCC/ISOO 2019. We extend a warm welcome to all the new members who joined us in July. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

 
Cynthia N. Rittenberg 2018 Travel Scholarship Winner, Paulina Ackley Akpan-IdioK

Paulina Ackley Akpan-IdioK, PhD, of Nigeria was awarded MASCC’s 2018 Cynthia N. Rittenberg Travel Scholarship for her research on the influence of supportive care intervention on the caregiving burden.

 
Meet Our Youngest Investigator, MariaLuisa Vigano

Seventeen-year-old MariaLuisa Vigano, the youngest investigator to have presented research at a MASCC Annual Meeting, delivered a paper on cannabis-based treatments for improving appetite in cancer patients and others with nonmalignant chronic diseases in June 2018.

 
MASCC Society News August 2018

In the August 2018 issue, we are pleased to announce MASCC's new Officers and Committee Chairs for the 2018 to 2020 term. Annual Meeting presentation slides and a Social Media Toolkit are now available. Our Annual Meeting Photo Gallery is live, too! Please note that the deadline for 2019 Annual Meeting Workshops and Parallel Sessions iAugust 17th. President Raj Lalla talks about the history and mission of MASCC. We also have news about a new tool to help patients organize their medical records, developed by MASCC member Dimitra Galiti, a report of the Hellenic Society of Oral Oncology's recent Oral Care Awareness Day and the upcoming 2018 Adverse Events Symposium, as well as important announcements and reminders. We extend a warm welcome to new members who joined us in June. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!
