2021    Throughout the year, we will share articles from the MASCC journal Supportive Care in Cancer. The “Editor’s Pick” section, chosen by the journal’s Editor-In-Chief, Dr Fred Ashbury, PhD, will cover a variety of topics to meet the many interests of our membership.

2021     We’re excited to announce that our Survivorship Study Group is launching a new Subgroup in Exercise Oncology. Led by Prof Ray Chan and Dr Marg Fitch, the new Subgroup is already generating a lot of interest among members, with a number of intriguing research areas proposed. The group plans to initially focus on: 1) research on people with metastatic disease, 2) implementation science in exercise oncology, and 3) research on clinical outcomes through exercise for cancer survivors. Collaboration with other Study Groups will be a priority for the new Subgroup, including the Fatigue, Geriatrics, and Neurological Complications Study Groups, among others.

2021    MASCC Staff Updates: We’re pleased to introduce our newest team members Ruxandra Nedu - MASCC Associate Director, Jocelyn White - Events and Marketing Manager and Sylvia Black our Communications Specialist. 

2021    We’re excited to announce our most recent MOU partner: the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (Sociedade Brasileira de Oncologia Clínica, or SBOC). SBOC is the national organization representing clinical oncologists in Brazil. Founded in 1981, it operates in many areas, including training and research, continuing education, health policies, professional advocacy, and national and international relations. In view of the growing importance of this specialty, SBOC seeks to constantly improve itself as a reflective, purposeful, collaborative and enterprising organization, aiming to contribute to the strengthening of oncology in Brazil and around the world. 2021    We’re delighted to announce three new MASCC-Designated Centers of Excellence in Supportive Care in Cancer:

2021    A long-time member, leader, and advocate for MASCC, Ed Rubenstein sadly passed away recently at the age of 63. As well as being instrumental in the development of MASCC’s mucositis and febrile neutropenia guidelines, Ed was also a warm and charismatic person who will be greatly missed by many. Many of our long-time members have shared their remembrances of Ed, his life and his work.

2021    Participate in Oral Mucositis Awareness Day this coming Tuesday, April 6!  This is an advocacy effort in support of Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Awareness Week and in support of Esophageal, Oral, and Head & Neck Cancer Awareness month. Oral Mucositis can take cancer patients by surprise. 2021    The Survivorship and Palliative Care SGs called for expressions of interest late last year from early- to mid- career researchers to lead our new research efforts to advance survivorship care for people living with metastatic cancer. As a result of that process, two outstanding researchers - Drs Jasmine Yee and Nicolas Hart have been selected to be the inaugural recipients of the MASCC Terry Langbaum Survivorship Fellowship.

2021     The MASCC/ISOO 2021Annual Meeting focuses on several themes of critical importance in supportive cancer care, including: the impact of COVID-19 and the pandemic on supportive cancer care, bioethics, cardio-oncology, and models of supportive care.  There will also be sessions on MASCC’s various Study Groups. 2021    MASCC President Elect and Board Member Maryam Lustberg, MD, MPH, has been appointed Director of The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Chief of Breast Medical Oncology at Yale Cancer Center. She will also join the faculty at Yale Cancer Center as an Associate Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology).
